Around 2.4 million people, aged 16 and over, who are registered with a GP practice in England will receive an invitation to take part in Europe’s biggest patient experience survey in early January. The answers we get help the NHS to improve local health services for people like you and your family. It is important that we hear about your experiences even if you haven’t visited your GP practice recently, or if you have filled in a questionnaire before.

The invitations go out mostly by letter to a random selection of people who have been registered with their GP practice for at least 6 months. The survey team at NHS England will follow this up with a text message reminder (where a mobile number is available) alongside further paper questionnaires to encourage as high a response rate as possible.

If you receive a survey, please do take the time to take part.  It provides vital information to the NHS to identify what’s working well and what can be improved. It helps to identify inequalities in experience too, as the results can be analysed across different protected characteristics.

If you want to check out how your practice faired in last year’s survey, take a look at the survey website: https://gp-patient.co.uk/practices-search

Group A streptococcal infection https://brentlocalservices.co.uk/group-a-streptococcal-infection/ https://brentlocalservices.co.uk/group-a-streptococcal-infection/#respond Fri, 09 Dec 2022 10:25:06 +0000 http://brentlocalservices.co.uk/?p=2897 Background

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a common bacteria. Lots of us carry it in our throats and on our skin and it doesn’t always result in illness. However, GAS does cause a number of infections, some mild and some more serious.

The most serious infections linked to GAS come from invasive group A strep, known as iGAS.

Whilst iGAS infections are still uncommon, there has been an increase incases this year, particularly in children under 10 and sadly, a small number of deaths.

Currently, there is no evidence that a new strain is circulating.

UPDATE TO PARENTS, GUARDIANS, TEACHERS and SCHOOL NURSES

You may have seen in the news that there has been an increase of Group A streptococcus (strep A) cases.  It is responsible for infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, scarlet fever, impetigo and cellulitis among others.

This is usually a mild illness but can sometimes result in a serious infection.

Look out for symptoms in your child, which include:

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • A fine, pinkish or red body rash with a sandpapery feel.
  • On darker skin the rash can be more difficult to detect visually but will have a sandpapery feel.

Currently, there is no evidence that a new strain is circulating.

It’s always concerning when a child is unwell. Strep A infections cause various symptoms such as sore throat, fever, chills and muscle aches.

As a parent, if you feel that your child seems seriously unwell, you should trust your own judgement.

Contact NHS 111 or your GP if:

  • your child is getting worse
  • your child is feeding or eating much less than normal
  • your child has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more or shows other signs of dehydration
  • your baby is under 3 months and has a temperature of 38C, or is older than 3 months and has a temperature of 39C or higher
  • your baby feels hotter than usual when you touch their back or chest, or feels sweaty
  • your child is very tired or irritable

Call 999 or go to A&E if:

  • your child is having difficulty breathing – you may notice grunting noises or their tummy sucking under their ribs
  • there are pauses when your child breathes
  • your child’s skin, tongue or lips are blue
  • your child is floppy and will not wake up or stay awake

How can we stop infections from spreading?

Good hand and respiratory hygiene are important for stopping the spread of many bugs. By teaching your child how to wash their hands properly with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, using a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes, and keeping away from others when feeling unwell, they will be able to reduce the risk of picking up, or spreading, infections.

POLIO https://brentlocalservices.co.uk/polio/ https://brentlocalservices.co.uk/polio/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 16:19:33 +0000 http://brentlocalservices.co.uk/?p=2889 Sewage sampling has identified at least one positive sample of the poliovirus currently present in the sewage of a number of London boroughs, including Brent. This suggests that there is community transmission of the virus within London.

Most people have been vaccinated against polio, so the risk to the public is low.  However, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that, to be safe, an inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) booster dose should be offered to all children aged one to nine in London.

This will help ensure that there is a high level of protection against polio and it will reduce the risk of it spreading through the community.

Health workers from NHS London will contact parents when it’s their child’s turn to come forward for a booster or catch-up polio dose. That will be either an extra dose, booster dose or just to bring them up-to-date with their routine vaccinations.

Families should also check their children’s Personal Child Health Record (or “Red Book”). If they are not up-to-date with their vaccinations, they should contact their GP to catch their children up as soon as possible.

Find out more about the current situation and how to get the polio vaccine on the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) website.
